Siena
If you are visiting Siena for the first time, we definitely recommend going straight into the heart of the city , towards the wonderful Piazza del Campo , one of the city's symbolic places. You can decide whether to start your day in Siena here or continue towards the Duomo , reserving the right to return to the square later.
Cathedral of Siena
Built between 1215 and 1263 on the site of an earlier structure, the cathedral is in the form of a Latin cross with a slight projecting dome and bell tower. The exterior and interiors are decorated in white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, black and white being the symbolic colors of Siena.
Piazza del Campo, Siena
The square has a circumference of 333 meters and was paved with a red brick fishtail design divided by 10 lines of white travertine, which give it the shape of a shell and create 9 sections which seem to point towards the Palazzo Pubblico, seat of civic government.
Strada del Chianti
If you have to go from Florence to Siena by car or motorbike and you are not in a particular hurry, VisitChianti strongly advises you to avoid the motorway junction called "Autopalio", but commonly called "4 lanes" by the locals, and to prefer alternative roads which they offer wonderful landscapes and unexpected encounters. Among these, a prominent place must be reserved for the legendary Chiantigiana, formerly state road 222, now a regional road. To discover the charm of the Chianti hills with a road trip, turn up the volume of the music and take a deep breath, because we're off on Route 222!
